Duck
began as a small fishing and community on the sound side and was named for the multitude of waterfowl nesting on its marshy shores. Its name harkens back to the days when Outer Bankers made their living from the insatiable appetite of city folks from the North for the area´s ducks and geese, as guides and suppliers.

Until the late 1970´s, this quaint fishing village was a well-guarded secret among the select few who explored its pristine, wide-open beaches; gnarled, salt-laden landscapes; and marveled at its exquisite soundside sunsets.

Although it is still home to an abundance of native wildlife and wonderful beaches, Duck has emerged as home to some of the finest dining, recreation, and shopping on the Outer Banks. The downtown village area, where walking is the most convenient and enjoyable mode of transportation, draws visitors and locals alike to its many diverse pleasures.

Duck, which stretches from the Southern Shores town line at the south end to the Currituck County line (at the north end of Palmer's Island just north of the Sanderling Inn), became the newest Dare County incorporated township in 2002, and local residents are taking their stewardship of their new town's natural beauty and allure very seriously. Whether you vacation in Duck or elsewhere on the Outer Banks, you need to make the trip to this terrific destination and see it for yourself.

Subdivisions in Duck answer the needs of virtually any visitor or investor. They are typically quite small, and range from the older communities that include modest beach cottages and no subdivision amenities to the newer upscale communities that rival the best that the Outer Banks has to offer anywhere in amenities and large, family-sized homes. The north-south route of NC 12 hugs the sound through Duck, so soundfront homes there, other than in Sanderling, are all on NC 12. Subdivisions are often only one or two blocks wide, with long streets leading in from NC 12 and dead-ending at the ocean. This means low traffic, since the subdivisions don't connect north-to-south, a boon for families with small children and those seeking a more quiet vacation spot.
